TRANSCRIPT B - GUS O' DONNELL/FRANCIS CORNISH/MARK PELLEW

BACKGROUND BRIEFING LONDON 22 FEBRUARY 1993

A

NICK COMFORT (DAILY RECORD):

Just to check the mathematics of the programme, are we right in

assuming from what you said that the President and the Prime

Minister will be together continuously from 3 to 9 o'clock on that

day or is there anything intervening?

GUS O'DONNELL:

That I will be able to confirm later.

There may be a short break

but at the moment it looks like they are together. I can't rule

out there being an odd break for drinks or something where they

may be joined by more people or may disappear for a short time but

I think basically they are together for that length of time.

QUESTION:

Will the Prime Minister feel any need to raise the subject of

nuclear testing or has that already been sorted out by ambassadors

or is it just going to be put off until much closer to 19967

GUS O DONNELL:

It is a subject that the Prime Minister will be briefed on,

certainly. How far we need to go, I will know better when we have

got there and we have talked to Robin Mennick about the progress

that has been made to date. It is something that we want American

help on and it is something that we care about both with a UK and

an EC hat on so it may well come up.
