MR O' DONNELL BACKGROUND BRIEFING

it and you think about the big isst and President Clinton will have been briefed on the big issues, as he sees it, in foreign policy, various things will have come up and he will be given position papers which demonstrate who lies where on these various issues. I would guess if you go down that sheet of paper you will see Britain appearing as the main ally of the US in all these EC issues, in various defence issues. If he comes to an objective assessment of that he would see that he is talking to one of his closest allies and a country that may well be able to provide influence within the EC, from the heart of the EC I hope, to ensure that the EC remains an outward looking free trading bloc. That is what we want and that is what we will be impressing on America that they for their part must do the same thing
QUESTION:
You did mention 101 other issues, do you think UN Security Council membership is likely to be one of them and do we mind whether it is or not one of the issues that comes up?
MR O'DONNELL:
I would be very surprised if that comes up as an issue, it seems to have gone away. We all know that if you open that Pandora's Box then all sorts of things will emerge and it is not a simple matter, but certainly there has not been any suggestion to us that that will be an issue that comes up,
