LONDON 4 APRIL 1993

MR PATTEN:

I just hope that Sir

I do not think it makes any difference.

David and others who are going to give Chinese leaders advice will give them balanced and reasonable advice and will not just go up to Peking and tell Chinese leaders what they want to hear.

INTERVIEWER:

So your message to him this morning is, it does not matter really what you say, it will not make any difference?

MR PATTEN:

I think that there was a very revealing photograph in the newspapers of Sir David holding his British passport, flying off to Peking from Hong Kong, with young Chinese students protesting about the role he was undertaking. I do not happen to agree with them, I think it is very good that people should go and advise Peking leaders, but I thought it was a revealing photograph,

INTERVIEWER:

What about when people as distinguished as Sir Percy Craddock start talking about fatal, fatal, fatal, and we are going to have

a period of siege for 4 years if Mr Patten does not change his policies that is not helpful from someone as well regarded as a

mandarin as Sir Percy?
