LONDON 4 APRIL 1993

INTERVIEWER:

Is it true that you think, by the way, that you will never be

Prime Minister, you once told me you wanted to be Prime Minister,

do you really think it is unlikely?

MR PATTEN:

I think it is extremely unlikely for a number of reasons.

First

of all, John Major will be Prime Minister for a long time and we

are the same sort of age; secondly, I am not a Member of

Parliament.

INTERVIEWER:

What are the odds on seeing you again on the floor of the House of

Commons less than 50/50 you would say, it was predicted?

A

MR PATTEN:

Yes, I think it is unlikely that I will be in the House of Commons

again. I am reluctant to predict too much because this time last

year I might not have predicted that I would have been having an

interview on Hong Kong this morning.

INTERVIEWER:

Do you think that making yourself Leader of the Conservative Party

is more difficult because you are on the left-wing of the Party,

is that your feeling?
