Is the Governor fit enough to carry on for the next four and a

half years?

We hope and expect him to make a full recovery. He fully intends to carry on.

Does this not place a permanent question mark over the Governor's

health? should he not be replaced in the interests of Hong

Kong's stability?

No. The treatment has a very high success rate leading to a full recovery. The Governor will resume his duties as soon as possible and go on leading the Hong Kong Government for the remaining years of British sovereignty.

Has Mr. Patten discussed his condition with the Prime Minister or Foreign Secretary?

He spoke to the Prime Minister on the telephone on Sunday, and to Mr. Goodlad yesterday. He did not speak to the Foreign Secretary, who was abroad.

Has the Governor considered stepping down?

No. He has a good deal of work to do in Hong Kong and he intends to see it though.

Has the PM asked the Governor to consider stepping down?

Certainly not.

What did the PM say to the Governor on the telephone?

Expressed support and sympathy and hoped he got well soon.
