UK/HONG KONG SCHOLARSHIPS: PHASING OUT OF JOINT FUNDING SCHEME
1. I attach a copy of the reply from Hong Kong (received 23 July) on the phasing out of the Joint Funding Scheme. Hong Kong's envisaged savings look compatible with our own estimated savings.

I intend to send an early reply giving clearance for the press release as it stands. We should probably let Hong Kong know that it is our intention to set up a separate
scholarship scheme with the £0.5 million rather than inject the funds into the existing UK/Hong Kong Scholarships. We should tell them that we are still exploring options and will let them have details as soon as we are able.
