Dear Secretary

UK/HK Scholarship Scheme 16.

Thank you for your further letter of 4 March. I am sorry that it has taken us such a long time to reply substantively to your letter of 21 October about a review of the operation of our jointly funded Scheme and your proposals for its future.

1

Firstly let me say that we are pleased at the so far very successful operation of this Scheme in providing bright young students from Hong Kong with the opportunity to undertake a period of study in the United Kingdom. We too should like to see it continue.

Having considered your several proposals for the future we should be content to agree with you the following provisions:-

(i) that the Scheme should normally seek to offer some nine new awards each year as well as covering the costs of those students continuing on course for a second or third year;

(ii) the United Kingdom will continue to share overall costs on an equal basis with the Hong Kong side ie the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club;

(iii) the British Government will continue to contribute through the FCO scholarships programme the sum of £40,000
