SOLICITOR
S K TANG BEQUEST: COST OF ADVICE FROM TREASURY SOLICI
1.
I have sounded out Mr Lawton (Treasury Solicitor) on the cost of their advice to us on the administration of the S K Tang Bequest. We have already received one Opinion of Counsel (13 January) which amounts to the princely sum of £600 plus VAT. We will also incur charges from Mr Lawton's office plus the cost of further Opinions of Counsel, which we will undoubtedly need in time. Mr Lawton estimated a rough final cost of £2,000 but stressed that this was a back of an envelope figure and not one to which he could be held. I fear that the cost is likely to be higher rather than lower.
2. Clearly we cannot do without the services of the Treasury Solicitor but we should start thinking of how we are going to pay their fees. Is there a mechanism/budget within the Office which provides funds for just such occasions or are we expected to raise the money on a departmental level. If the latter is the case, would it be possible to use AUSPB funds? We would afterall be aiding a worthwhile project in Hong Kong.
