Sino-British relations. Britain is clinging obstinately to its own course and has directly sabotaged the talks. This will of course affect Sino-British relations. It is not what China would wish to see but Britain should be held responsible for all the

consequences.

Q: The British side have said that they are willing to continue talking. Will China inform the British side through diplomatic channels that there will be no further rounds of talks?

A: The British attitude is very hypocritical. On the one hand they are thoroughly undermining the talks and on the other they say they want to keep talking. Wise people will see very clearly that expressing that they are willing to keep talking is trying to shirk the responsibility for undermining the talks.

Q: Will China consider imposing sanctions against Britain in response to Patten's move?

A: Sino-British relations involve cooperation in various fields. Hong Kong is an important element of Sno-British relations. Britain has now sabotaged the talks and this will therefore surely affect Sino-British relations, including economic and trade relations.

Q: Will China plan an early resumption of sovereignty over Hong Kong?

A: We are now watching developments closely. In his remarks on 24 September 1982, Deng Xiaoping showed great foresight.
