At a meeting with the Wanchai District Board delegation led by Peggy Lam, in answer to a question about the popularisation of Putonghua and simplified Chinese characters, Wang Qiren of the HKMAO said that the Basic Law stipulated that the education policy of the SAR would be determined by its own government, adding that as the Basic Law would be strictly followed, Hong Kong people need not worry that mainland practices would be applied to Hong Kong
