This may well have come through to you on the official get, but I thought you might be interested in having the attached, namely the notes which Peter Sutch prepared for the helpful, private meeting which he had with Chris Patten last week.

Our necessity, as Swires, is to hold to the middle ground. cannot evade the fact of life (and it has, to date, been a very good signal for the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong) that PRC interests have invested over £500 mn. cash in the equity of Swire Group companies in Hong Kong and we have a corporate responsibility to listen to what they, and indeed the 24,000 individual shareholders in Swire Pacific and Cathay Pacific, have to say.
I have told Peter Sutch that his current personal and corporate position as Taipan of Swires in Hong Kong is, at a more modest level, analogous to that of King Hussein in the Gulf War - so he has nothing (much!) to worry about.
