be involved, we do not have enough information on which to
ascertain whether or not this case might involve wider policy
issues for the UK Government. If we consider that this case does
touch on our wider policy interests, we will wish to consider with you how best to make our views known to the US.
In order to help us to understand better the interest of the FTC in the proposed acquisition, we have asked them to provide additional information about the investigation and, in particular, whether either of the subsidiaries of the German or Hong Kong companies in the US is involved in the product market for sewing machines.
For the time being, I would ask that you take note of the FTC investigation. There is no reason not to bring the FTC investigation to the attention of the Hong Kong company. In our experience, companies are generally already aware of the US investigation.
On a separate but related point, it would be helpful to us to know if Semi-Tech (Global) Co. Ltd currently have any interests in the product market for sewing machines within the EC.
