I have been inveigled by Charles Powell into lunching with the Committee of the Hong Kong Association on Friday 1 October. Given my profound ignorance of the subject, I have warned the Committee that this may be a rather fruitless experience from their point of view.
It would be enormously helpful if you or one of your cohorts could give me a quick oral up-date, perhaps on the morning of 1 October, on current issues in Hong Kong and on what you would like me to say to the Mandarins about the negotiations. I read the odd telegram in the dense series, but would be happy to receive a copy of any idiots guide or standard brief which you may have around at the time.
