OECD/HONG KONG: EC AMBASSADORS” LUNCH

24 JUNE

1.

By way of background you may wish to note the following points which have arisen since your meeting with Mr Joseph Wong on 16 June

(reported in your 17 June letter to Kevin Tebbit):

(a) Wong has already spoken to Gerhard Abel (Director, Trade)

about Hong Kong's proposed

proposed application for observer status on the Trade Committee and Trade Committee Working Party (TCWP) [Note: you may wish to ask Abel for his views when you have lunch with him on 1 July];

(b)

(c)

(d)

he will be back in Paris on 7 July when he hopes to have lunch with the Japanese Ambassador and to call on your Australian, Canadian and Commission colleagues as well as Deputy Secretary Generals Taniguchi and Cornell;

Andrew Wong will be in Paris for the DNMEs' Investment Workshop on 12/13 July. I shall organise an informal lunch for him with (provisionally) my US, Dutch, Norwegian, German and (new) Japanese colleagues as well as the Chairman of the TCWP;

there is an extra Trade Committee meeting scheduled for November (9/10), which we would seem to

to be perfectly timed for Hong Kong's application (rather than having to wait until February). I shall advise Andrew Wong of this meeting although it will remain up to then to decide on

timing.
