Businessmen represented a wide range of interests: power generation, water, transportation, aerospace, civil engineering, retailing, financial services.

Mission met Vice Governor of Guangdong, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, Guangdong Power Bureau, Guangzhou Mass Transit and China Southern Airlines. It visited a water treatment plant, a joint venture and a major department store.

Minister undertook that the ATP offer for the Guangzhou metro would be made by the end of January 1993.

Chinese consistently stated their commitment to an expansion of the bilateral trading relationship.

At no stage was there any reference to the current political difficulties over Hong Kong.

Mission also had an extensive programme in Hong Kong 5-7 January, including a meeting with the Governor.

Our strategy for China/Hong Kong and Taiwan includes:

Closer coordination of trade promotion efforts by diplomatic posts, DTI Area Advisory Groups and British business associations in the markets

Trade promotion programme in the UK, particularly to persuade senior business decision makers to commit themselves to the business opportunities in the region.

Well-focused promotional events to raise local awareness of the quality and competitiveness of UK goods and services.
