The market exchange rate of the Hong Kong dollar against the US dollar remained stable under the linked exchange rate system.
Reflecting the movements of the US dollar against other major currencies, the overall value of the Hong Kong dollar, as indicated by the effective exchange rate index, rose slightly from 114.0 at end-November to 114.2 at end-December.
(a) At 5 512, the Hang Seng Index at end-December was 298 points lower than at end-November.

Transactions dropped markedly along with plunges in share prices. Average daily turnover decreased from $3.09 billion in November to $2.47 .billion in December.
