the department for Enterprise

4. My point is not simply confined to losses falling on ECGD, though that will naturally be of interest to your Department. To the extent that British companies are insured with ECGD against cancellation, the loss will not fall on the companies, and is therefore material to your present exercise. Of course, ECGD cover may not entirely compensate the companies concerned either in relation to cancelled contracts or over the loss of future business which they could expect to win and which did not, in the circumstances you postulate, go forward.

5.

Given that this exercise is evidently a delicate one, I have not myself approached ECGD about it. You might wish to invite an ECGD representative to your meeting. The Grade 3 concerned is Michael Hawtin.

I am sending copies of this letter to Peter Ricketts (FCO), Chris Elston (BOE) and to John Meadway here.
