The turnover figure disclosed represents turnover allocated to the location from which the Group supplies its telecommunications services. This is generally the same as the location to which telecommunication services are supplied. However, it does not follow that international telecommunications traffic which the Group may be responsible for carrying on part of its route would necessarily originate in that location. The Group does not have access to information on the original source or ultimate destination of international telecommunications traffic.
The Asia and Pacific results include operations in Hong Kong. The turnover of Hong Kong operations was £1,345.0m (1991 – £1,117.0m) and the trading profit was £482.9m (1991 – £372.9m before an exceptional charge of £9.1m in respect of the costs of staff rationalisation).
The Western Hemisphere results include operations in Jamaica. The trading profits shown above incorporate the Jamaican operations translated at the average rate of exchange.
The United Kingdom and Europe results comprise the United Kingdom, Europe, turnkey projects and marine actities. The trading profit of Mercury was £154.7m (1991 - £ll6.lm) after depreciation charges of £135.0m (1991 - £96.5m). The Mercury turnover was £915.3m (1991 - £701.9m).
