As I have said, one and

and a half years have passed since I

took up the assignment of Consul-General of Japan in Hong Kong,

and through my experiences here, I have been very much impressed

by the energy, vitality, creativity and international-mindedness

of Hong Kong and the people who live here.

From our point of view, I believe that we Japanese must

consider not only the question of "What will be the future of

Hong Kong?", but also, "What can we do for the future of Hong

Kong?". I, as Consul-General, will do my best to help develop

good relations between Japan and Hong Kong, and cooperate with

the people of Hong Kong to ensure that the stability and pros-

perity of Hong Kong is preserved and enhanced beyond 1997.

In concluding, I should like to thank you again for being

given this opportunity to speak before such

distinguished

audience here today, and express my profound desire to see Japa-

nese and Hong Kong people working together to develop our close
