both stable and prosperous, we think it is essential for Hong
Kong to preserve its open and stable political

structure beyond 1997. The question of Hong Kong is regularly
taken up for discussions when Japanese leaders meet with Chinese
leaders. The Japanese side always emphasises to the Chinese side
the importance of preserving the stability and prosperity of Hong
Kong beyond 1997.
The question of Hong Kong is also a regular subject when
Japanese and British leaders meet. In fact when British Prime
Minister Major made an official visit to Japan, at the discus-
sions held on the 20th September, Hong Kong was one of the sub-
jects. Mr. Hosokawa, our Prime Minister, and Mr. Hata, our For-
eign Minister, said that Hong Kong's stability and prosperity
to the entire East Asia region and therefore Japan
watched the situation in Hong Kong with strong interest. They
also emphasized the importance of preserving the politically and
economically open system beyond 1997. Our side also expressed the
hope that agreement
agreement will be reached between the British and
Chinese sides on
on the future of Hong Kong through constructive
dialogue.
