HONG KONG: AMENDMENT TO LAW ON DIVORCE
1. Thank you for your teleletter of 15 October.
2. We are not sure that the Secretary of State's consent is strictly necessary for amending the law on divorce in Hong Kong but, to err on the safe side, I propose to seek ministerial endorsement from Mr Goodlad. I do not, at this stage, anticipate any problems in securing this.
3. Before submitting to the Minister, however, I would be grateful if you could provide more details (by fax) of the proposed amendments. For example, your teleletter does not state the current minimum periods of marriage or separation, the size of the proposed reductions, or the present procedure for obtaining a divorce by joint application.
4. Once I have this information to hand, I will submit to Mr Goodlad, and will let you know the outcome as soon as possible.
Yours sinceen,
Charles Moare
