Opinion polls demonstrate reasonable approval

for other "democratic" elements in the 1992

constitutional package but not for District Board reforms:

HKU Poll, 23/24 September

(a) At least half the

respondents approved the

1992 proposals on single seat/single vote

constituencies (50 per cent) and a lower

voting age (51 per cent).

(b)

However, a majority opposed the abolition of

appointed members from District Boards (29 per

cent for, 45 per cent against).

THE COMMUNITY'S PREFERENCES

HKG has refrained from

modified

publishing in full its

constitutional package. As a result, opinion polls

have not been able to identify in detail public preferences

between the 1992 package and the modified version.

Nevertheless,

opinion polls demonstrate public

confidence in HKG's

management of the Peking talks and

public commitment to the original 1992 constitutional

package:
