1. Sir R McLaren's teleletter to Hum usefully establishes the parameters for the timing of rounds until the end of September.
We agree that it is sensible to think in terms of a recess from the end of the week beginning 21 July to the early part of the week beginning 6 September.

In planning our strategy up
strategy up to the summer break, there are
two other relevant considerations:
The only possible date for a meeting of OPD (K) before the Tokyo Summit is Thursday 1 July. We have therefore reserved this date in Ministers' diaries on a contingency basis.
A visit by the Secretary of State to Peking would have to follow immediately after the Tokyo Summit, ie on 9 July.
3. Our strategy will need to take account of these dates. As
