This is just to thank you very much for your letter of March 24th, which you sent to a number of colleagues, about Hong Kong.
About a year ago I arranged for Martin Lee to come to Strasbourg and meet a number of EP colleagues. He also addressed the EPP Group and attended a debate on Hong Kong.
I was very impressed by his sincerity and by his conviction that, if the Chinese of Hong Kong are ready to push for greater democracy, accepting any adverse reaction from Peking, the British in Hong Kong should certainly be ready to take a similar line. After all it is the Chinese who will have to live in Hong Kong after 1997, not us.
I thoroughly support the line that Chris Patten is taking and I am sure that you will back him to the hilt. If I were a betting man, I would say that fundamental change is likely to occur in China before the British flag comes down in Hong Kong.
Yous ever
