SIR PERCY CRADOCK
A
Problem
1. Sir Percy Cradock has written to Sir Robin Butler asking
whether, if he were to amend his memoirs to take account of the
points made in his meeting with Sir Robin and Sir J Coles on
2 July, we would withdraw our objections. He also invites us to indicate any other passages we find unacceptable. Sir Robin has asked the PUS' advice on this proposal.
Recommendation
2.
I recommend that subject to the Governor's approval (Sir J Coles could canvas this when he sees the Governor on 29 July) the PUS advise Sir R Butler to propose a further meeting with Sir P Cradock. This meeting (in which Sir J Coles might take
part as before) might be used to explore Sir P Cradock's
readiness to accept a number of further detailed amendments. Subject to his reaction Sir R Butler may be able to indicate that HMG would not formally object to the publication of the resulting text. I submit a draft letter.
