HONG KONG: SIR PERCY CRADOCK

1.

Sir Percy Cradock telephoned me this morning. He asked me if I could let him know what had been going on since our previous telephone conversation (some 10 days ago). I explained as best I could.

2.

I reminded Sir Percy that he had earlier mentioned to you an approach from the BBC, asking him to take part in a programme on Hong Kong in early March. Sir Percy said he had heard nothing more from the organisers of the programme. He wondered whether the project had been shelved. He thought it had originally been timed to coincide with the gazetting of constitutional legislation in Hong Kong: perhaps that was one reason why the project was hanging fire. The BBC representative who had contacted him had said he would also be in touch with FCO officials to ask them to take part. I said that to the best of my knowledge we had heard nothing.

3.

Sir Percy said that he would let me know if he had any further approach from the BBC. If the programme came about he would be careful what he said. He naturally hoped that his task would be eased by an announcement that talks between Britain and China were to begin. If talks did not come about he would have to choose his words with greater care.
