Action Taken
Thank you very much for your attar) of 5 May and
for approaching Sir Percy Cradock.
I am not surprised by his reaction.
I wonder if
you would let me know how we intend to deal with the Chinese about his status and who will be responsible, if .
I have little doubt necessary, for briefing the media.
that we will be having to deal with a huge bubble of speculation here both from the local press and expatriate journalists like Jonathan Mirsky, the recently-arrived Times correspondent. Assuming Sir Percy decides to go ahead with the visit, we will need to get over the message in your paragraph 4 unambiguously and well in advance of his departure. I am sure it would be best if the necessary briefing were done from the FCO rather than in Hong Kong.
May I leave it to you to confirm with Sir Robin McLaren and Tony Galsworthy that they should not provide any background briefing to Sir Percy when they see him later this month? Many thanks.
