Den Marlin,

SIR PERCY CRADOCK

1.

We discussed on the telephone the "Governor's letter of 11 May to John Coles, which crossed with my own letter to the Governor of 10 May. SCHE

2.

The Governor's letter has now been largely overtaken, in particular by the fact that the news of Sir Percy's visit to Peking has now broken and we have deployed a press line to deal with it(confirm that I have reminded Robin McLaren and Tony Galsworthy (in accordance with the terms of our press line) that there is no question of their providing background briefing to Sir Percy when they see him later this month.

3.

Sir Percy telephoned me today about a practical aspect of his visit to China. He confirmed that one or two Hong Kong journalists had contacted him with .. questions about the visit. In reply had had emphasised that it was an entirely private visit, with no secret agenda. He had a board meeting in Shanghai, and would be calling through 'Peking on his way home. I said that News Department were taking a similar line.
