We have copied to you the press line which is being used by News Department in response to enquiries about Percy Cradock's forthcoming visit to Hong Kong and Peking.

There is one point arising from the press line which I should like to bring to your particular attention. We are making it clear to the press that we have not given Percy any briefing in advance of this visit. It follows from this, of course, that he should not be given any briefing on the progress of the talks when he passes through Hong Kong and Peking later in the month. You will understand that this is a point to which Ministers and the Governor attach some importance.

I have passed to Percy Cradock the information in your Telno 638. He was grateful for the hotel booking, which he is happy to have converted into his own name. He arrives in Peking from Shanghai at 11.20 on-27 May by flight CA 950. For his departure on 30 May, he is at present booked on both a Lufthansa flight leaving at 10.20 and a British Airways flight leaving at 11.00. On the assumption that the British Airways
flight will be a direct one, he would be most grateful,
if you could confirm that booking locally.
