ANNUAL MEETING WITH THE ROYAL SOCIETY, 20 FEBRUARY

HONG KONG

Objectives

1.

To encourage the Royal Society to establish the kind of

links in Hong Kong which will be able to continue after

1997.

Points to make

- Britain will continue to have major political and economic

interests in Hong Kong after 1997.

- We will be setting up an important Consulate-General to

maintain and promote those interests

- Britain's prime political interest is in the long-term stability and prosperity of Hong Kong. We shall continue to

have a special relationship with Hong Kong, not only on

account of the past, but in view of our role as one of the

two co-signatories of the Sino-British Joint Declaration.

- The British Council will continue to have an important presence in Hong Kong after 1997.
