You may wish to note from Annex I that the number of retired officers by 1.7.97 listed in the above paragraph is

different retirement ages on

for different types of officers. Based on the above revised figures, the officers co be covered

HMOCS Compensation Scheme is 435 as worked out This is some 60 more than the figure of 374

bv

in Annex II. given in our October projections.

Certainly,

the

introduction

of

the

HMOCS

Compensation Scheme Will lead some officers to switch to the new pension scheme (NPS). It would be difficult to tell at this stage how many

of the officers will actually switch to NPS until the deadline as there would be many factors (apart from the benefits Of the compensation scheme) which these officers will take into account in their decision.

In addition there will be some officers (such as Messrs Parkes and Mackley) who opt to retire between the ages of 50 and 55 between now and 1997. In view of the above, it may be prudent to work out different scenarios for calculation based on different assumptions in respect of the ratio of officers who will retire at ages

of 55 and 60 years. However it is very difficult to guess what these assumptions might be.
