Q. Where will 1BW go when they leave here? Who was due to replace them?
Q. What ceremonies are planned to mark stages of the run-
down?
A37. [Except as at A38-49 below] These details are not yet available, and will be decided as the outline decisions on
witharawal are converted into detailed planning over the next
few months. Further announcements will be made in due course
on significant stages in the plan.
Q38. Will the Black Watch be replaced by a British Battalion?
A38. Refer back to A17.
Q39. Why are 1RGR to be replaced by another battalion from the
UK in late 1996?
A39. On current plans accompanied service for the Gurkhas will
end in November 1996 (to coincide with the Nepalese school
year). 1 RGR will go to the UK. An unaccompanied battalion from the UK will replace it, and be the final infantry battalion in Hong Kong.
Q40. Details of "adjustments" in logistic and supporting
units?
A40. Clearly with fewer infantry units we will need fewer engineer, signals, transport and other logistic support
assets. There will be substantial reductions in the Queen's
Gurkha Engineers, Queen's Gurkha Signals, Queen's Own Gurkha
Transport Regiment, the Royal Logistic Corps elements, and
other support troops. Detailed plans for these consequential
reductions will be worked out over the next few months.
