Q34. Effect on LEP?
CONFIDENTIAL
A34. It has always been recognised that locally raised units
will be disbanded, and the men made redundant before the
transfer of sovereignty. There is no change to those plans.
Recruiting into the Hong Kong Military Service Corps has now ceased, and the training depot will close. RN LEP recruiting
plans are under review.
Q35. Why have you made the decision to cease HKMSC recruiting?
A35. We have for some time regarded the decision about when to cease HKMSC recruiting as flexible. It depended on how many
of our people decide to re-engage. At the moment that trend is healthy. With less than 4 years to go it is not cost-
effective to continue to recruit and train new people whom we
must then make redundant after very short careers.
Q36. Effect on LEC?
A36. Chinese civilians who work for the garrison will
gradually reduce in line with the overall reductions in garrison size, and as particular sites close. Redundancy terms for them are agreed. We will assist where possible in
resettlement.
