Q15. Which extra tasks will RHKP take on between now and 1995?
A15. The Police will have complete responsibility for internal
security roles by 1995. They will also take on specialist
tasks eg high risk search.
Q16. One battalion inadequate to provide against future
uncertainties in run up to 1997?
A16. No. We are confident that the garrison will be capable
of dealing with all foreseeable requirements. Eventual
reduction to one battalion reflects judgements that threats to
stability and security in Hong Kong will be low between 1995
and 1997. This must be seen against background of expansion
and capabilities of RHKP. Our plans are always flexible, and
can be reconsidered later should a serious unforeseen
contingency arise. Contingency plans also exist for
reinforcement from the UK in extreme circumstances.
Q17. Which battalion will stay in Hong Kong?
A17. On current plans the newly amalgamated Gurkha battalion
will stay until late 1996 when it will be replaced by a UK
one.
Q18. Why is single battalion to be Gurkha, not British?
this a problem?
Is
A18. This best suits our planning. No significance in the
composition of the battalion, all are capable of doing the
job. Note that on current plans final Gurkha battalion
withdraws in late 1996, and UK battalion is here at the point
of final withdrawal.
Q19. Reductions amount to UK abandoning Hong Kong before 1997?
