Transport Workers'
General Union
(FTU) is a strong body with a large membership and includes all types of workers in public transport drivers, mechanics and cleaners. Any major disruption of public transport would cause chaos.

It is of the utmost importance that people can be transported to their homes and safety before any curfew is imposed and it is essential that public transport services should be sustained as far as possible in areas not affected by disturbances or a curfew.

The courses of action open to the Government and to employers may be summarised as follows :

solution, if possible, of the strikes/ sit-ins by conciliation by the Labour Department or direct negotiation between the parties;
the provision of adequate security for loyal staff, management and vital equipment; and

the
critical
application
of
appropriate
legislation or, where such legislation is in suspension, its introduction and application.
The Government will, of course, adopt a and impartial attitude to all disputes, to determine which side is in the right. It will thus avoid the taint of pro- management bias.
