available and, where necessary, can intercept and identify aircraft entering

British airspace which cannot be identified by other means. In addition, air

defence destroyers patrolling British waters are linked to IUKADGE and

provide additional radar and electronic warfare coverage, facilities for

aircraft control and additional fire support with medium-range surface-to-

air missiles.

Military Task 1.11: Intelligence and Surveillance

326. At a time of uncertainty and an assumption of extended warning of

any major threat to the United Kingdom, strategic intelligence and timely

indicators and warnings are essential elements of national security and the

assessment of realistic warning times. Military intelligence encompasses

the collection of intelligence by land, sea and air assets, and the processing,

validation and correlation of information. Intelligence and surveillance activities assist in the formulation of policy and defence programmes,

provide indicators and warnings, and support military operations and operational planning. They also support arms control and verification, including monitoring of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Military Task 1.12: Physical Security and Protection

327. The civil police have overall responsibility for the preservation and

restoration of law and order, and for the protection of individuals, both

Service and civilian. The armed forces, the Ministry of Defence Police and

Guard Service and, in some cases, civilian security services operate with

the civil police and other agencies to safeguard sensitive information, protect Service personnel (both on and off duty) and their dependents against terrorist attack, and to guard establishments, ships, aircraft,
