both RN and Army commitments, including boarding parties for naval operations and Commando units for unaccompanied tour deployments in

the infantry role.

315. A Province Executive Committee', chaired by the Deputy Chief

Constable and attended by senior RUC and Army representatives, has been

established to assist in the overall co-ordination of the counter-terrorist

effort. In addition, the Army have aligned their boundaries with those of

the RUC, to improve co-ordination of command and control: the final step in this process was completed in January. During 1992 a number of

changes were made to the structure of Royal Irish Regiment home service

battalions which released personnel from administrative tasks for

operational duties.

316. In 1992, 356 awards were made for gallantry and meritorious conduct, underlying once again the bravery and dedication of all the

security forces in Northern Ireland. Six soldiers were murdered, including

Ranger Waller, murdered in front of his wife while home on Christmas

leave from Cyprus, and Lance Corporal Warnock, a part-time member of

the Royal Irish Regiment, murdered in front of his small son. A further

320 soldiers were injured whilst serving in Northern Ireland. Three

members of the RUC and 76 civilians were killed; 429 civilians were

injured in terrorist attacks. 354 people were convicted of terrorist offences,

and 243 weapons were recovered. The Army's EOD teams were called out

on 1,544 occasions and in all, some six tonnes of explosives were

neutralised. The security forces in the Republic of Ireland uncovered a

number of terrorist arms caches.
