Major General DUTTON is a forceful, practical officer with a fine record - particularly in command but also on the staff. At various levels, he has commanded with skill in BAOR, Berlin and Northern Ireland. As a staff officer and instructor, he is experienced in technology, politico/military planning and public relations. In all of these fields, he has excelled.

As a Lieutenant Colonel, after a tour as a DS at the Staff College, he was Military Assistant to successive Adjutants General. One of these wrote of him, "I count myself lucky to have had such an articulate and imaginative staff officer as my adviser and confidant at this difficult time". He then commanded the 1st Battalion of his Regiment and earned the description, "an infantryman of considerable talents".

After only one tour in the rank of Colonel, as an innovative Assistant Chief of Staff at Headquarters United Kingdom Land Forces, he was appointed to command 39 Infantry Brigade in Belfast. Here he established close, harmonious relations with politicians, businessmen and church leaders, earning great respect. The experience was of particular value to him in his next appointment as Director Public Relations (Army) at which he again excelled.

Major General DUTTON is a positive, ebullient and dynamic personality, at his best under pressure in a combative, infantry environment but showing significant political awareness. He has had a successful tour of duty as Director Infantry and his experience and personality suit him well for appointment as Commander British Forces Hong Kong.
