Timetable for the registration of
British Dependent Territories citizens as British Nationals (Overseas)
Under the Hong Kong (British Nationality) Order 1986, a person who is a British Dependent Territories citizen (BDTC) by virtue of a connection with Hong Kong (e.g. by birth, naturalisation or registration), shall cease to be such a citizen on 1 July 1997. He may, however, retain British nationality by applying for or to be included in a British National (Overseas) (BN(O)) passport. In accordance with the Second Schedule to the above Order, Hong Kong BDTCs born in the years specified in Column 1 below must submit their applications on or before the corresponding dates specified in Column 2.
To enable an orderly flow of applications, the Immigration Department has drawn up a timetable for Hong Kong BDTCs to come forward for registration and eligible applicants are advised to submit their applications in accordance with the following schedule:

Note: (1) Eligible applicants in need of a BN(O) passport ahead of the timetable (c.g. to meet travel needs) may
submit their applications earlier than the proposed schedule.
(2) Applications are to be accepted within normal office hours of the receiving offices of the Immigration Department. For applications sent in by post, the date of the post mark will be taken as the date of receipt of application.
(3) Only in special circumstances will an application for registration as a BN(0) made after the respective final date be accepted. If such is the case, the applicant must state the reason(s) for failing to apply before the respective final date in the 'OTHER INFORMATION' column in page 3 of the passport application form. Any documentary evidence in support of the claim must be produced.
(4) Passports issued after 30 June 1997 will be dealt with by the future British Consulate-General in Hong
Kong Special Administrative Region.
