force of the British

Nationality Act 1981, on 1 January 1983, the definition of

"Hong Kong belonger" was extended to include all Hong Kong

confer on persons of Chinese race who satisfied the 7 years

ordinary residence requirement, but who were not British

nationals, a right of abode in Hong Kong without first

acquiring the status of

of British Dependent Territories

Citizen, by naturalisation or otherwise. Schedule 1 to the

Immigration' Ordinance now defines "Hong Kong Permanent

Residents" as :

"1.

2. Any person who is a British Dependent Territories

citizen and who -
