if none of the above courses of action is appropriate; it should be sent to the Treasury for disposal.

the case of gifts presented to a Head of Department, the approval of the Secretary for the Civil Service should be sought on how the gift is to be disposed of. For all other officers, the Head of Department is requested to ensure that these rules are abided by and to issue such directions and maintain such records as are necessary to do so.

GIFTS AND DONATIONS TO A DEPARTMENT AS A WHOLE

26.

Gifts and donations which are offered or presented to the department as a whole, rather than presented to an individual officer should be dealt with as follows. Gifts and donations offered to a department for the benefit of the public do not require permission under the Acceptance of Advantages (Governor's Permission) Notice Heads of Departments should deal with such gifts and donations in consultation with the department's policy branch.

Gifts and donations which are offered or presented to the department as a whole for the benefit of staff should not be accepted without the approval of the Secretary for the Civil Service and the department's policy branch. In cases where the gift would result in recurring cost (for example, in fuel or maintenance) being borne by the Government, the advice of the Secretary for the Treasury would need to be sought.

SPONSORED VISITS

Sponsorship for visits undertaken by an officer in his official capacity as a representative of a department is not regarded as an advantage to the officer and permission need not be sought under

Acceptance of Advantages (Governor's Permission) Notice 1992. Such cases should be dealt with in accordance with Civil Service Branch Circular No.
