Your teleletter of 18 December arrived on 21/12 having crossed with mine to you of the day before. Perhaps I could expand a little.
2. I brought back to Hong Kong the details of the three AA Grade houses, the details of which were passed to your Department by Nicholas Ng under cover of his letter of -11/12/91. I asked our MO, Russ Jarvis, to take a fresh look and prowled around the three houses myself on two occasions.
Our MO's views were clear. He did not think any came within range pointing out that -

each was around two-thirds of the space standards; the two Middle Gap properties would present security problems; and
(a) (b)
(c) none had parking facilities for guests.
On the space standards, I understand the norm for a Head of Mission is 727 square metres (7825 square feet) of usable space. The HKG figures are for total floor area and should be trimmed by around 20%.
5.
My reconnaissance ruled out 6 Lloyd Path as quite out of the question. Even by Hong Kong standards, access is of extreme difficulty along a steep single-lane track.
6.
I was initially attracted by the two properties in Middle Gap Road but after talking to local residents agreed with our MO. The access road is (just) dual-lane but cars are not supposed to park on it and the nearest parking area only for 5/6 cars is over 100 yards away.
