HONG KONG : NEW CONSULATE-GENERAL PREMISES

The FCO has today announced the winning design for new purpose-built premises to accommodate the British Consulate-General and British Council in Hong Kong after the transfer of sovereignty to China on 1 July 1997.

In line with the British Government's objectives of achieving a high standard of design for its buildings, the Overseas Estate Dept of the FCO commissioned and briefed six

architectural practices (having both British and Hong Kong experience) to prepare initial sketch designs from which the most suitable could be selected.

The six practices were Leigh and Orange Ltd.; PSA International; RMJM Hong Kong Ltd.; P and T Group;

Llewelyn-Davis, Weekes Hong Kong; and Terry Farrell and Co.

Ltd.

The design by Terry Farrell and Co. Ltd has been selected. It is an example of the high quality design for which the practice is well known.

The new premises will be built at Supreme Court Road on the site at present occupied by Colvin House. Construction is expected to start in mid-1993 and take 21⁄2 years to complete. Swire Properties Projects Ltd, Hong Kong have been appointed as our local Project Manager for the project.
