PS/Lord Caithness

RESIDENCE OF FUTURE CONSUL-GENERAL

1. The Director of Administration has written to

Mr Ricketts with the results of a detailed study of three

houses which HKG consider have potential for the residence

of the future Consul General. Only one of the houses

has any real potential, and only then if we were able to

demolish it and build from scratch. Lord Caithness may wish

to take the opportunity of his stop-over in Hong Kong to

thank the Governor for HKG's efforts, but to express the hope that they have some rather better properties up their

sleeves. (Should the opportunity not arise we shall, of course, pursue at working level.) OED agree. Mr Ricketts

has seen in draft and agrees.

2. In Mr Bertam's absence I discussed this with OED

Area Manager Mr Savage. None of the properties on offer provide adequate representational accommodation. The minimum senior grade entitlement would require a drawing

room, a dining room, a kitchen/preparation area, and a study

of respectively: 65 square metres, 40 square metres, 40
