Dear Sir

I wrote to you on November 11, 1991 relating to the issue of non-British citizen spouses of British citizens resident in Hong Kong. In my letter I raised two questions.

The first related to the current status of the delay in the processing of applications for UK citizenship by those spouses who have returned to the UK. This question followed on from information you had earlier provided to me (your letter of Oct 11, 1990) after our meeting in Hong Kong on Sept 20, 1990.

The second question was to ask whether or not it is true that UK passports have been issued (or promised) to non-British citizen spouses of British citizen members of the police force here, without those spouses having to serve the usual three year residency qualification in the UK. If this is the case (as I am told it is), then my group supports it as a sensible step in the right direction, but wonders why the police are singled out to the exclusion of other UK citizens who also make a considerable contribution to Hong Kong.

To date I have not received a response to these questions. If my earlier letter has been mislaid I should be pleased to fax a copy. My group will be meeting shortly and I had hoped to be able to report to the members on the above points.

Yours sincerely
