Dear Dept,
1 The media here is showing an interest in claims by ethnic Indians in Hong Kong that they are caught in a citizenship trap; that they are neither British citizens nor Hong Kong citizens, and that the Chinese may not recognise them as Chinese citizens after 1997.
2 One of the major Sunday papers plans to run the story this Sunday, and would be grateful for British Government comment on what is being offered to the ethnic Indians in the way of passports and citizenship. Is it any different to what is being offered to the majority of Hong Kong residents, and if so, why?
