Processing of Applications

There has been considerable progress in the processing of applications received. The initial profiles of all OGs in the general occupational class and the disciplined services class were endorsed by members in December 1991. By 30 June 1992 all applicants in these two classes had been informed of the status of their applications. A total of 24,515 rejection letters have been issued to those who are below the quota mark, and 3,409 letters have been sent to those borderline applicants informing them that their cases are still under consideration.

The Immigration Department are continuing to conduct verification interviews with those potentially successful applicants. As at 30 September 1992, 26,843 applicants have been interviewed. About 75% of the potentially successful applicants are expected to be interviewed by the end of 1992, and the entire interviewing process is expected to be completed by mid-1993.

Registration

The number of successful applicants who have been registered as British citizens picked up significantly during the past few months. As at 30 September 1992, 38,228 persons had been registered, which includes 13,419 principal applicants and 24,809 dependants. This represents an increase of 19,341 beneficiaries (6,825 principal applicants and 12,516 dependants) since the last report in May. Establishment of the Home Office Nationality Team in Hong Kong-has been strengthened. As a result, the rate of registration has increased significantly from about 300 principal applicants to over 500 principal applicants a week.
