However, the then Home Secretary was able to announce during the Second Reading of the British Nationality (Hong Kong) Bill that the position of the wife of an expatriate British citizen in Hong Kong would be protected. Her right to settle in the United Kingdom would be maintained even if she were to be widowed before settling here, assuming that she had not re-married and was still resident in Hong Kong. A person in this position would, of course, need to complete a period of residence in the United Kingdom before applying for naturalisation as a British citizen and, in turn, obtaining a British passport.
