Th at Richmond College are here for between 1 and 4 years while those on the

partnership programme, which consists of study programmes lasting one semester for

students from American State Universities, stay only 4 or 5 months. All are full-time

students generally in the 18-22 age range.

Under the concession AIFS American students may be lodged with families in the United

Kingdom in return for providing no more than 15 hours' work per week in babysitting,

child care and light household duties. In return the students will receive free

accommodation and meals, but no pocket money. The period of these arrangements is

limited to 12 months for each student. The concession was agreed on the basis that

these arrangements are different and entirely separate from the au pair scheme, one

of the main purposes of which is to enable foreign girls to improve their knowledge of

English.

Entry clearance is not required, but students should produce documentation to the

immigration officer certifying that they are members of the scheme and giving details

of the educational establishment and the length of time expected to be spent in this

country. They are admitted on Code 2 for an appropriate period, depending on the

length of their course at Richmond College or on the length of the AIFS Partnership

programme and on their means. Police registration is required of non-BUNAC students

only if their stay is more than 6 months.
