SECRETARY OF STATE'S VISIT TO HONG KONG, 26-28 JULY
BRIEF NO 4: CHECKLIST FOR MEETING WITH DISTRICT BOARD
CHAIRMEN
Appreciate the important work done by you at District Board
level. Commitment of valuable time. A good example of democracy in action.
Know there is concern at the increasing number of violent crimes. The Governor and the police Force have made this a top priority. Working to make cross-border cooperation more
effective. Have made our concern clear to the Chinese
including Vice Foreign Minister Jiang Enzhu. Hope
establishment of Chinese Public Security Bureau Liaison Office
in Hong Kong will help. Hong Kong still an enviably safe city - but understand this is no comfort to the victims of violent
crime.
་
Good that inflation has now come down somewhat (to 8.8% in
the year to May). But no room for complacency. Needs to be tackled firmly: know the Government is taking all possible
steps.
Firmly committed to maintaining good cooperation with China
over Hong Kong. This is best for Hong Kong. However, when necessary, we will stand up for Hong Kong's interests.
Clearly disappointing that the airport financing problems have not yet been cleared up. Hong Kong Government have made constructive proposals to meet Chinese concerns. We hope the issues will be resolved soon: both sides agree Hong Kong needs
a new airport.
